Student Life

From Morning Gathering to After Care, students at CCA experience the richness of a Christ-centered education. Cornerstone has much to offer students who want to pursue growth as a whole person. Classroom teachers and staff provide excellent care as they seek out what is best for each student. When class ends and school is out, CCA provides numerous opportunities for students to get involved. We believe it is important for students to able to express themselves in meaningful ways and develop skills that help to enhance true character.

My experience with the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Program

February 16, 2012
By Kareem Wilkerson

Now that Cornerstone Christian Academy has tennis during gym twice a week, I had a chance to talk to Coach Jerry from the Arthur Ashe Youth tennis program. I asked him a few questions, like what does the center do?  He told me that it helps diverse citizens and kids keep on a steady path to make something out of their life. Coach Jerry has been playing tennis since he was 30 years old – over 20 years. I also asked him about the center’s founder, Arthur Ashe.

Arthur Ashe was the first black male professional tennis player. Arthur Ashe won many medals from many different competitions. Arthur Ashe was one of the first people to speak freely about HIV and AIDS. Arthur Ashe contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion, and he died from a related disease.  Coach Jerry asked me about Althea Gibson, but I did not know who she was.

Althea Gibson was the first black professional tennis player. Althea Gibson made the way for Arthur Ashe and many other black players. Althea Gibson won many awards that no other tennis players won until this day.  He asked me if I knew how Althea Gibson and Arthur Ashe knew each other.  I was not sure, and he told me that Arthur Ashe, and Althea Gibson had the same tennis coach.

During my tennis session I had at Myers Recreation Center, I learned a lot of cool and neat tricks. I learned about the racket, and how to hold and how not to hold it. I learned how to hit the ball faster and how to control it better. I learned the backhand stroke and a forehand stroke. They taught me what each part of the racket was.  I didn’t know anything about tennis before that day. Now I am actually starting to like tennis because it’s a fun sport to get into. Coach Jerry also gave me some advice.

Coach Jerry told me that in life I have to try to get where I want to go, and keep looking forward. He told me that people will try to bring you back, but you have to keep your mind focused. Nothing is just handed down to anyone.  We have to work to get what we want out of life. If I want a Porsche I have to work to get it. If I want a Mustang I have to work to get. Nothing at all will be just handed to me because life doesn’t work that way. He told me that he once was a boy and he had hopes and dreams. But he made his hopes and dreams come true and that’s something I need to try and do to get somewhere in life. He told me that today the world is so different but if I keep my head focused and straight ahead nothing will be able to stop me. And that I have to want it for myself not anyone else. I have to get a career that I like to do, not something that I am not interested in except for the money, because I won’t be happy. He said keep on the right path and I will get somewhere.

It’s En Fuego time here at Cornerstone Christian Academy. This is an event when students stay overnight at the school. It’s really fun to go to. There are activities, dancing, art & crafts, and much more. Cornerstone has celebrated the En Fuego for years now. The En Fuego is for 2nd to 8th Grade. I’m looking forward to the Talent Show. There will be rappers, singers, dancers, and a variety of other talents people will show the school. It should be a blast!

Enterainment

I’ don’t really listen to all the non- sense music in this world but I do have my favorites. Other than classical music, there is a type of music that soothes the soul. It’s called Gospel Music. If you enjoy gospel music and you want to hear it loud and live, come to cornerstone on Wednesday. On Wednesday’s we go to Chapel at 1:30 p.m. and we celebrate God and what he has done in our lives.

We also talk about scriptures and the bible. We unleash from the cruel things of this world and we believe in God and our personal savior, Jesus Christ. We only stay in chapel for an hour and 30 minutes, so if you want to go you need to make sure to get there on time or you'll miss it.
If you would like to attend you need to make sure to check in to our school's office and schedule a time to visit.

Also if you are considering Visiting Cornerstone for Chapel or for any other reason,

Cougars 3rd victory

February 03, 2012
By Hassan

On February 2, 2012 the cornerstone cougars had their third win against Calvary Temple. It was an exciting game to watch as cougars were tied up with Calvary. The starting five did a great job at playing defense, and having good offensive plays. Now as the Cougars have their third win they feel pretty confident about the season, and expect to win more games to come. There next game is on February 7th, at Timothy academy.

       EVENTS AT CCA

Around CCA there are a lot of events that are coming up that are very interesting. Such as the African American bee and En Fuego. The African American bee is a trivia contest that the 4th through 7th grade classes are asked to compete in.  The 8th graders do not participate, but they still contribute by preparing speeches to share with the student body. The lower students are having a spelling bee.

En Fuego means on fire and we use the word to mean on fire for God. Students have been paying their money for En Fuego because only a maximum of 100 people can attend. When we are at En Fuego we do lots of activities such as computer games, dancing, and communicating with each other. The goal for En Fuego is to stay up through the night from 8pm to 8am just for fun!

Here is a snapshot of the next two weeks.

2/2/12 - 2/17/12

  • The African America contest started February 1st. Grades 4 and 5 both had  students individually competed with a very close competition. This year 5th grade Yundi came in first place with her classmate Elijah, close behind in second.
  •  Valentines day is coming up which means cornerstone students will be dressed in white,     black , pink , or red.
  • Grades 4th through 8th will be taking a trip to the movie theater on February 15th to see the movie Red Tails. It is a movie about the first African American pilots in the Tuskegee who are called to duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.
  • The 15th there will be an all school chapel where students will receive awards for all of their hard work in the second quarter.
  • Cornerstone's annual En Fuego is also happening next week! En Fuego, is a parents night off where students stay up all night and do multiple activities.  It begins on February 17th  at 8 p.m. and last until 8 a.m. on the 18th.
